Overview

A school site near Swinton, South Yorkshire, was being considered for redevelopment while remaining in educational use. Localised mining constraints needed to be understood before the project team could define an appropriate investigation strategy.

Clear Environmental was appointed to undertake a Coal Mining Risk Assessment, distinguishing the areas where shallow mining could affect development from those where mining-specific investigation was not currently justified. The assessment was undertaken before a detailed development layout was available.

Scope

  • Reviewed mining records, geological mapping, historical borehole information and the available desk-study evidence.
  • Assessed the significance of recorded mining, shallow coal seams and historical changes in ground levels.
  • Distinguished localised higher-risk areas from the remainder of the site.
  • Defined when targeted mining investigation would be required, together with associated monitoring and construction-stage precautions.
  • Set out how the assessment should be reviewed against the proposed layout, foundations and excavation depths.

Outcome

The assessment gave the project team a basis for developing the layout and planning further investigation around the areas that could materially affect the scheme, rather than assuming the whole site required a mining-specific drilling programme.

Clear identified where targeted investigation would be justified if development overlapped the higher-risk areas, and where it was not considered necessary on the available evidence. This provided a proportionate route into the next planning and design stages, with the scope to be reviewed once the layout was available and appropriate monitoring and construction precautions retained.
