Gloucester – BRE 365 Soakaway Assessment for SuDS Design
Clear Environmental delivered rapid BRE 365 soakaway test results in Gloucester to support SuDS design and planning approval for a commercial development project.

Overview
Clear Environmental determined soil infiltration capacity via BRE 365 percolation testing to support Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) design for planning approval. Results were provided with a swift turnaround, satisfying tight planning deadlines.
Scope
- Conduct BRE Digest 365-compliant infiltration testing at the proposed soakaway location in Gloucester.
- Assess soil permeability and groundwater presence to calculate infiltration rates for soakaway sizing.
- Provide a rapid technical report to enable civil engineers and planners to progress drainage design and LPA submission without delay.

Outcome
- Trial pit excavation and infiltration tests were performed in accordance with BRE 365 methodology.
- The infiltration rate results were delivered rapidly, to align with project timelines and planning milestones.
- The calculated soil infiltration rate supported a soakaway design suitable for a 1-in-100-year rainfall event with 40% climate change allowance, consistent with Gloucester City Council’s SuDS requirements.
- The soakaway-based drainage strategy was successfully accepted by the Local Planning Authority, removing the need to discharge to surface water sewers.
