The uncertainty
Existing buildings were to be demolished for a new self-storage facility with parking, access and a service yard. Before detailed design, the team needed to know whether the proposed building could be supported on conventional foundations.

What we established
Conventional shallow foundations were not an appropriate basis for the proposed building.

What changed
The design team gained a practical basis for considering deeper foundations, piling or ground improvement, with site-specific pavement design data. The principal ground-risk uncertainties were resolved before detailed structural design.

Detailed structural design on an unworkable foundation assumption.
