Overview

Clear Environmental was engaged by a private developer in Elmbridge, Surrey to carry out infiltration testing in accordance with BRE Digest 365. The testing formed a critical part of the sustainable drainage (SuDS) strategy required to support a planning submission for a new-build residential development. The goal was to assess whether soakaways could be used effectively on-site to manage surface water runoff.

Scope

  • Perform BRE 365 soakaway testing using the three-fill-cycle method at the proposed drainage locations.
  • Record accurate infiltration rates based on local ground conditions to support drainage design.
  • Provide a full written report including trial pit records, infiltration data, and design input to assist the client's drainage consultant and planning consultant with a SuDS-compliant design.

Outcome

  • Testing was completed over a single site visit. Trial pits were machine-dug to the required depth, with vertical sides and appropriate base preparation to ensure valid results.
  • The trial pits encountered sandy gravel strata, which provided favourable conditions for conducting infiltration testing in accordance with BRE Digest 365.
  • Observations and measurements were recorded, with all test data captured under controlled conditions to ensure validity and compliance with the standard methodology.
  • A clear, well-structured infiltration report was delivered shortly after testing, allowing the client’s design team to finalise the drainage layout and proceed with planning.
